Members of the National Peace Council (NPC) on Wednesday appealed to the Upper East Regional Security Council (UEREGSEC) and other stakeholders working towards lasting solution to the Bawku conflict to remain neutral.His Eminence Peter Cardinal Kodwo Appiah Turkson, Archbishop of Cape Coast Diocese of the Catholic Church and Chairman of the Council made the appeal when he led members to pay a courtesy call on Mr Alhassan Samari, Upper East Regional Minister at Bolgatanga. Members of the Council were on their way to Bawku to meet leaders in the conflict, Kusasis and Mamprusis.His Eminence Cardinal Turkson, said in conflict and peace resolutions neutrality was a major tool and urged the stakeholders to be neutral in discharging their duties to facilitate the restoration of lasting peace in the area.He commended the security personnel for their high sense of duty in maintaining peace and security in Bawku and urged them to continue to exhibit professionalism in the execution of their duties. “You need to remain responsible but humane in discharging your duties to perfection,” he added. Mr Samari said the situation in Bawku was returning to normalcy but not stable as there was lack of confidence and people could not interact as in the past. Mr Samari said economic activities in the area had been affected, the hospital was working at low capacity and schools had been closed down.He said another problem that was likely to spark off another conflict was farming as farming activities were about to start and people would struggle for land.Mr Samari commended the Stakeholders, especially religious leaders who played an important role in maintaining peace in Bawku and appealed to them to continue the process.Members of the Council in separate meetings with the Bawku Naba and leaders of Mamprusis in Bawku appealed to them to co-exist in peace whilst Government examined their issues and come out with a concrete solution to address the problem.Source: GNA
