The Ghana Football Association is to name a substantive coach for the senior national team, the Black Stars at the end of this week, but the new manager will certainly not be caretaker coach Sellas Tetteh.
FA President Kwasi Nyantakyi told Joy Sports that Sellas Tetteh will revert to the Under-20 team, the Meteors, where he is in charge, and even though the Ghanaian’s competence is not in doubt, he is not ripe yet for the big task.
“If we wanted to make him the head coach we would have first of all gone ahead to do that without asking him to act in an acting capacity. I have told him quite clearly that nobody doubts his competence but we do not think that he is ready now to handle the team. We think we can help him to build his competences; his skills, his experience over the period and then in future he could take over the reigns of the team.”
That stance comes in the wake of fans agitations to hand the job to a ‘local coach’, a proposition strongly supported by the association of Ghanaian coaches.
Kwasi Nyantakyi told Joy Sports’ Ernest Koranteng that the new coach for the job will need to possess the Coaching License ‘A’, and have a track record of some achievement to show.
But there is certainly every need to name a coach urgently. “We were very unambiguous that we will appoint a new coach as soon as possible. We were looking forward to appointing a coach even before our match with Australia, but due to some unexpected circumstances we were not able to meet that target. This week we are going to work tirelessly around the clock to get a coach. I’m looking forward to getting a coach even before the weekend”.
Names doing the rounds as likely job holders are coming in from Serbia, where former coach, Ratomir Dujkovic remains a big hero with the Black Stars.
