Ghana’s quest for a place in the women’s football competition at the 2008 Beijing Games kicked started on Saturday with a 2-1 away win over Angola.
The women’s Olympic qualifying series begins over the weekend for Africa’s sixteen nations vying for the single slot to the 2008 Beijing Games.
Ghana's women’s Olympic team proved too strong for their Angolan opponents scoring a goal apiece in each half of the game in Luanda.
Rumunatu Tahiru scored to put Ghana in the lead before the hour mark.
Ghana held onto the lone goal to end the first half.
However, back from recess, the Angolans cancelled out Ghana’s first half lead as the score cards read 1-1.
And 17 year-old prodigy, Anita Amankwah a revelation during the African Women’s Championship last year in Nigeria was on hand to crown off the efforts of the Black Queens when she grabbed a brace on the day to make it 2-1 for Ghana.
The return leg is slated for March 11 at the Coronation park.
Africa has a single slot for the Olympic Games and the 16 nations competing in the qualifiers this weekend are seeking to pick the sole ticket.
Aside the single slot for Africa, the runners-up from the CONCACAF and CAF qualifiers would be compete in a one-off decider for a place in the Olympic competition.
The other fixtures for the qualifying rounds are Liberia-Ethiopia, Nigeria-Senegal, Guinea-Zimbabwe, Eritrea-Morocco, Equatorial Guinea-South Africa, Namibia-DR Congo and Mozambique-Algeria.
