The Asante Akim South District office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has embarked on a district wide educational campaign to sensitize the public on political tolerance.
The exercise, which is geared towards ensuring a peaceful election 2008, is also expected to enlighten the public on election procedures.
Mr Lawrence Tweneboa-Kodua, a Civic Education Officer, addressing a durbar of chiefs and people of Bankame near Banso at the weekend, said intolerance of each others’ views was a threat to the nation’s fledgling democracy.
He said though political parties held divergent views and ideologies, their ultimate goal was to pursue sound economic policies for the benefit of the entire nation.
He entreated followers of the various political parties to desist from acts of violence during political activities, since it could derail the nation’s quest for a peaceful elections.
Mr Tweneboa-Kodua further implored the leadership of political parties to complement efforts of the NCCE by spearheading the campaign against violence to protect lives and properties.
Mr Emmanuel Victor Boadu, Senior Field-Officer of the District Directorate of the NCCE, said political tolerance enhances mutual respect and trust among political parties hence it was vital to multi-party democracy.
