Superintendent Ebenezer Lartey, Northern Regional Police Crime Officer has urged students in the region to see themselves as ambassadors of peace, to help make the region a conflict-free area. The Crime Officer made the call when he made a presentation on the theme: "The need for peace, the role of the community and the police", at a day’s workshop, organised by the Presbyterian Junior High School for its students in Tamale on Wednesday. Mr Lartey told the students that, their education would not be meaningful if they did not have any positive impact on the society, saying, "one of this is for you to play the role of peace educators". He said children and women suffered most in times of conflict and emphasised the need for them to educate members of their communities on the importance of peace in development. "When there is conflict, your daily activities including your education, get disrupted and in worst cases, you even lose your parents and other loved ones", he said. Mr Lartey urged the students to learn to be tolerant with one another so that when they became adults it would become part of them. He mentioned the lack of discipline, as a canker eating into the fabric of society, saying, "if you want to succeed in life you must be disciplined and never wait for anyone to tell you what is right before you do it". Superintendent Lartey also urged the students to give the police the necessary information that could lead to the arrest of criminals in their communities and promised that their identities would always be protected. "Your information is the starting point for police investigations," he said. The Regional Crime Officer urged students, who go to school on motorcycles to wear crash helmets always to protect themselves. "You are too young to play with your lives, insist that your parents buy you helmets", he said. Mr Samuel Amoli Luther, Headmaster of the school, expressed the need for children to tolerate each other's views and urged stakeholders to collaborate with teachers, to enhance education in the region. He said the school organised the workshop to equip the students with the basic knowledge in peace building to promote peace in their communities.Source: GNA
