A 24-year-old suspected armed robber broke both hands when he attempted to escape by jumping through the window of the one-storey building housing the Akyem Swedru Circuit Court where he was standing trial.The accused, Michael Kwasi Boateng, was, however, captured by the police and is on admission at the Oda Government Hospital under heavy police guard.The facts of the case, as presented by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Osei Kwadwo, are that Boateng, who had been on the police wanted list for allegedly committing various armed robberies in the Birim South District was arrested for breaking into the house of one Mr Kofi Mensah at Akyem Swedru in May this year and stealing various items.When Mr Mensah confronted Boateng for unlawfully entering "his premises, Boateng allegedly pulled a locally manufactured pistol and threatened to kill him.Mr Mensah reported the case to the Akyem Swedru Police, who managed to arrest Boateng.In the course of the arrest, Boateng allegedly stabbed Constable Stephen Aboagye in the stomach with a double-edged knife, which resulted in Constable Aboagye's hospitalisation for one week.The accused was prosecuted at the court on May 28 and remanded until June 9, 2008.When Boateng appeared again before the court on June 9 and was called to the dock, he jumped through the window of the court building, fell flat on the ground and broke both hands in the process.
Despite the injury he sustained, the accused got up and attempted to run away but he was overpowered by the police and. sent to 'the hospital where he was admitted.Boateng will appear before the court again on June 16, this year to face charges of robbery, causing unlawful harm and threat of death.
Meanwhile, the presiding judge, Mr E.K.B. Apenkwa, has appealed to the Oda Divisional Police Command to beef up security at the court, saying the few policemen at the court could not maintain security there.Source: Daily Graphic
