Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has announced his decision to quit Fenerbahce with one year left on his contract with the Turkish giants.The 27-year-old, who has fallen out with the club over a botched knee surgery by Fenerbahce doctors, revealed that he has not been paid for several months.Appiah is confident Fifa will allow him to leave on a free transfer later this month, as he has fully recovered from the complications of the surgery."I am happy to say that I have fully recovered from the breathing difficulties from the surgery but I am sad to say that I will no longer play for Fenerbahce," Appiah told BBC Sport."I am leaving Fenerbahce because of the despicable treatment I received from the management during my months out of action but I am sad for the fans because of their fantastic support they gave me during this trying time."I got injured while playing for this club, delayed my surgery just to help the club win the title, the club's doctors messed up the operation and now management are stabbing me in the back."The management have made it impossible to stay so I am looking ahead to new challenges."The midfielder revealed that his relationship with the club turned sour when he refused the club permission to suspend his registration to allow them use another foreign player in his place while he was injured.Fenerbahce are still holding out for a transfer fee for Appiah after reporting the midfielder to Fifa claiming he had gone AWOL.But the Ghana captain is confident Fifa will rule in his favour, insisting that Fenerbahce gave him permission to receive treatment in Italy and support Ghana at the African Cup of Nations."I travelled to Italy in the company of the vice president of the club Mr. Murat Ozaydinli to receive treatment," said Appiah."While I was in Italy with Mr. Ozaydinli the invitation came from my country to support and he duly approved my travel to Ghana for the Nations Cup."I think they were angry because I turned down the request to freeze my licence but they did not explain the consequences and also I thought it was unethical and insensitive to make that request while I was confident of returning."With this evidence and since I have not been paid for several months I am confident Fifa will approve me as a free agent," Appiah concluded.He has recovered from the complications of the surgery and is currently training with his former club Brescia to regain match fitness after a seven-month absence.Appiah is keen on a transfer to the English Premier League with Tottenham, Portsmouth and West Ham all linked to signing the midfielder.He joined Fenerbahce in 2005 from Italian giants Juventus after winning the country's league title that season.His decision to leave Juventus ended his seven-year stay in Italy after earlier spells with Udinese, Parma and Brescia.Source: BBC
