Mr Moses Foh-Amoaning, Chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has urged successful boxers to play a significant role in the development of the sport in the country.
He stated that “Nobody can develop the sport better than the very people who had benefited from it” and so the time has come for them to contribute their quota towards the sport’s development.
Mr Foh-Amoaning who said this in an interview with the GNA Sport in Kumasi lamented about how successful boxers in the country had totally neglected investing in the sport for the benefit of the younger generation and respective boxers after gaining so much from the sport.
He urged the accomplished boxers to liaise with other stakeholders to provide such requisite facilities such as a boxing coliseum, rings, gloves and punching bags among others to make the sport more attractive to the youth in an effort to produce more potential boxing champions for the nation.
The GBA Chairman accused the media of contributing to the low patronage of boxing in the country especially in recent times as they dedicate all their time and resources to promoting football to the neglect of the sport and other disciplines.
Mr Foh-Amoaning said the situation is quite unfortunate since Ghana has over the years produced about seven world boxing champions and also contributed a lot to raising the nation’s image at international competitions.
He pointed out that the GBA was therefore doing all that it could to whip up the interest of the youth in boxing at the regional levels to unearth more talents in the sport.
The Chairman lauded Joshua Clottey for winning the IBF Welterweight title recently and said the feat had brought honours to the country and also commended the Black Bombers for their brave performance at the on-going Olympic Games in China.
