The senior national football team, the Black Stars, were beaten one-nil Friday evening by the Greens of Libya in their crucial penultimate qualifier for the ongoing World cum Nations Cup. The unimpressive Black Stars conceded the lone goal six minutes from regulation to mark an unhappy debut for new coach Milovan Rajevac. The result saw the Stars cede their Group 5 top spot to the Greens who now have 12 points as against 9 by the Stars. General skipper Stephen Appiah marked an equally sad return to the side after 10 months lay off due to injury, coming on very early in the game for Michael Essien who took an early knock out of the game. A largely defensive approach to the match saw Junior Manuel Agogo as the lone ranger ahead of the team to slug it out with the physical Libyans, allowing the homesters regular forays into the Stars’ goal area. They were hampered mainly by the heroics of dependable goalkeeper Richard Kingson in the Ghanaian post. The goal resulted from a failed defensive work by the rather impressive Harrison Afful at left full back, trapping the ball onto the path of an advancing Ahmed Osman who whipped it past the outstretched hands of Kingson. Gabon and Lesotho, the other members of the group, have their turn on Sunday. The Stars will next play Lesotho on Sunday, October 12 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi in a must win encounter in order to make it to the next round of the qualifiers while Libya will need only a draw away to Gabon. Africa will present six nations at South Africa 2010.
