A derby game in Congo turned sour between local rivals Nyuki Club and Socozaki on Sunday 14 September when the former club's goalkeeper charged up the pitch in an effort to turn a game that Nyuki were losing.
Radio Okapi claim the goalkeeper tried to reverse the scoreline by using ''fetishist'' witchcraft spells.
A riot then broke out within the stadium and police tried to break up the violence with teargas as the players brawled and members of the crowd even stoned the sorcerer.
As a result of the police action, the crowds flooded the exit-gates causing the deaths of at least eleven people; several more were injured.
''Fetishist'' spells in Voodoo and certain central African religions involve using an inanimate object as the 'fetish', and performing a ritual on it.
The 'fetish' then becomes an organic vessel capable of performing tasks. Once the task is complete the spirit leaves the 'fetish' and it reverts to it's inanimate state once more.
