Akosua Ketu, a student of the Sunyani Polytechnic, and Derek Abrefa, of the Ghana Immigration Service, won the ultimate prizes in the female and male categories of the recent Ghana Table Tennis Association’s (GTTA) National Seniors Invitational Championships at the D.G Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, Accra.Ketu who hails from Agona Swedru in the Central Region defeated Cynthia Kwabi of Ghana Immigration Service 4-0 in the finals of the competition to clinch the ultimate prize in the female category.She took home GH¢250.00 and a trophy.On her way to the finals, she smashed off Francisca Amankrah of Fire Service by 4 – 0 at the quarter-finals, before adding Beatrice Gyasi of Ghana Police Service at the semi-finals with a 4 -2 victory to win the topmost award.Kwabi who finished second, progressed to the finals by beating Efua Oforiwah Owusu Agyei of CEPS at the quarter finals stage with a 4 -3 win before beating Lynda Annor of Immigration Service at the semi-finals 4 – 3.Annor placed third with a 4-2 victory over Beatrice Gyasi who eventually took the fourth position.Abrefa’s feat is the fourth in the series of the GTTA National Seniors Invitational Championships since 2006.The Immigration Officer ensured he won the first position by beating Raymond Donkor of Ghana Police Service to the second position 4 –1 in the finals.Abrefa defeated Courage Naneve of Ghana Navy at the quarter finals by 4 – 0 and claimed a 4-2 victory over Acquah Aikins also of Ghana Navy at the semi-finals before reaching the finals.Abrefa received GHC 300.00 and a giant trophy as his prize.Ernest Quarcoo of Greater Accra picked up the third position after beating Acquah Aikins of Navy 4-1.Second, Third and Fourth placed players in both male and female categories received cash prizes ranging from ¢250.00, ¢200.00 and ¢150.00 in that order.The event attracted 131 competitors made up of 75 men and 56 women drawn from nine regions, the Security Services as well as individual seasoned senior players from various organisations and Table Tennis Clubs throughout the country.The championship was organised to select players into the Senior National team “the Black Loopers” to prepare for international competitions.Source: GNA
