Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joe Ghartey has announced, he has stepped down from the NPP flagbearership race despite successfully making it into the top five presidential aspirants qualified to contest in October.
Joe Ghartey who obtained 22 votes ( 2.98%) out of 740 votes cast at last Sunday's Super Delegates Congress told Adom FM, his ambition was to make it into the top five - and he has achieved that.
He declined giving reasons for stepping down.
The NPP held a Super Delegates Congress last Sunday to choose a precious five out of seven who will contest for the ultimate flagbearer slot at October 18 national delegates’ conference.
Former Information Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng (13 votes) and former Trade Minister Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku (10 votes) crashed out after polling 1.76% and 1.35% respectively.
Party insiders say, one or two more may drop out of the race.
Another contestant, Osei Ameyaw who managed 16 votes (2.17%) to pick up the last ticket has told Joy News he will " consider the proposal [to step down].
He stated "at this stage, we would consider everything that is put on the table."
Surprise pack and former deputy minister and MP for Mampong in the Ashanti Region Addai Nimoh has said he would consult his supporters to determine whether he would continue or make way for a contest expected to be between two main contestants, Nana Akufo Addo and arch opponent Alan Kyerematen.
