A member of the communications team of Alan Kyremanten, Barimah Sarpong has said asking flagbearer aspirant to step down from the race, is not an option that is even worth considering.

He said that even though Alan’s team respects proposals made by top members and other supporters of the party, their request is something he [Alan] is not ready to consider because becoming flagbearer of the party is his greatest desire.

Mr. Barimah said this Wednesday, on Adom FM's morning show ‘Dwaso Nsem’ in response to the Secretary of the Committee for the Advancement of Democracy, Jackson Adu Kwabena who said, he and some supporters of Alan will be totally distraught if he steps down from the race.

He said the decision if taken, will mean the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not win the 2016 elections and that will be detrimental for the party.

According to him, the current economic conditions in the country can only be solved if a man like Alan is made flagbearer and subsequently becomes president.

Giving the example of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Mr. Adu Kwabena said, selecting Alan who is well-versed in economic issues, is the best person to help salvage the ailing economy, adding that “if we have this person in the party why do we pass him by and choose someone else? We need someone who will save us from the sinking ship”.

But Mr. Barimah, on the other hand, has asked the aggrieved supporter to calm his nerves and that Alan does not have any intentions of stepping down from the flagbearership race.

He said the purpose of the Special Delegates Conference was to prune the seven aspirants to five and that has been done, therefore, asking people to step down is against the constitution.

He admonished that articles in the constitution should be adhered to and that people should be allowed to exercise their rights as members of the party.

He stressed that it was necessary for people to be strengthened in order to succeed in their work rather than being prevented from doing their job and that “Alan has expressed his interest to be flagbearer for a long time now and he is still working towards achieving it”.

The NPP held its special delegates congress on August 31 to prune the seven flagbearer aspirants to five in order to allow the party select a unique falgbearer in October.

Out of the over 700 votes cast, Nana Addo won with an 80 percent margin and there have been calls for the rest of the four candidates to step down and allow him run the race alone.

But so far only Joe Ghartey has willingly stepped down from the race.
