Government appointed Assembly Members have been withdrawn with immediate effect, a statement signed and issued by Mr Mahama Ayariga, Presidential Spokesperson on Friday said.
The statement said: "President John Evans Atta Mills has directed the withdrawal, with immediate, from all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies of the 30 per cent presidential appointees to the assemblies made under Article 242 (d) of the Constitution of Ghana, 1992. New appointments to fill the vacancies shall be made in due course."
Ayariga later told Joy News the directive does not affect District, Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives, who have been asked to remain at post until further notice.
The Presidential Spokesperson also assured that the President was indeed in the process of appointing replacements to the affected offices, explaining also that since there is not likely to be any assembly meetings in the immediate, the momentary void to be created would not affect governance adversely.
He said in any case, the District, Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives would be at post to administer their respective jurisdictions.
