President John Evans Atta Mills on Tuesday stressed the need for divine guidance and direction as the nation worked for peace and development. He called on the citizenry to rekindle their belief in God, explaining that, the peaceful transition of power was a victory for all Ghanaians and reiterated his commitment to do what was in the best interest of Ghanaians. President Atta Mills made the remark when a delegation from the Christian Council of Ghana called (CCG), led by its Chairman the Rt. Rev Yaw Frimpong Manso, called on him at the Castle, in Osu, Accra. The delegation congratulated the President and his Vice Mr John Dramani Mahama on their assumption to the high offices. The President made it clear that any other agenda, apart from what would bring progress, peace and development would be disruptive and entreated the Christian Council to participate fully in the national development efforts. "I will need wisdom more that anything else," the President said and stressed that his administration would always seek the face of the Lord to bring blessings to the people of Ghana. The President extolled the role of the Council in ensuring that the last elections were peaceful, which he said attested to God's hand in the affairs of men and called on people without belief in God to make events at Ghana's last polls make them change their minds. Referring to the Holy Bible, President Mills stressed that a nation would only stand on the ideals and principles of justice, honesty and fairness and respect for what was right. He entreated the Council and the Christian community to continue to offer their support, assuring them that his government would seek their advice and collaboration in the running of the State. The Rt. Rev. Frimpong Manso gave the assurance that the Council would keep to its role as it sought to bring the prophetic voice of God in all matters in relation to the national life without fear or favour. "In addition to our continuous prayers, we hope that you will seek the counsel of God daily," the Christian Council Chairman, who is the also the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana said. He expressed the belief of the Council that God had put the President in the position to do his will, hence the need to be careful to avoid ungodly counsel. The Rt. Rev. Frimpong Manso said many Ghanaians faced challenges with daily living as they struggled for employment, food, shelter and other necessities of life and they could hardly wait for improvement in their lives. The CCG, he said, believed that the issues of rule of law, justice and accountability would be taken seriously as promised in the Presidents inaugural speech. He announced that the Council, established in 1929, but with a current membership of 15 and two organisations, would be celebrating its 80th anniversary, which would be climaxed with a thanksgiving service on November 1, 2009.
