Ghana target Danny Welbeck has been handed his first call-up to the England Under-21 team by manager Stuart Pearce for a forthcoming fixture with Ecuador.
The Manchester United forward has grabbed the headlines after some impressive displays for the European champions.
Welbeck, who also qualifies for Ghana and Scotland through his parents, has previously played for England Under-19s.
A senior national team appearance for England will scuttle Ghana's dream of convincing this promising prospect.
"As we saw from the last Championship, there are players who come with a late run to get into the squad," Pearce is reported by The Manchester Evening News as saying.
"In this squad, we are having a look at Danny Welbeck who has done well in the U19s and broken into the team at Old Trafford which is no mean feat."
