Twelve labour unions currently engaged in a tussle with government over their Tier 2 pension funds have begun consultations to contract independent auditors to scrutinize their pension account.
President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Christian Adae Poku, told Joy News the leadership of the various unions have been impressed upon by their members to take this step.
Their concerns follow a report by the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to Parliament, intercepted by Joy News, which reveals that government has failed to transfer GHS269 million cedis of workers’ pension contributions to the designated Bank of Ghana account.
Concerns over exactly how much has been lodged in the account, and who should manage the Tier 2 pension funds, forced public sector workers to call a strike that was called off on Tuesday.
Mr. Adae Poku told Joy News' Francis Abban that the revelation about Government’s arrears to workers’ pensions account sent “panic” among members.
The arrears contained in the report, is a “vindication of what we have been trumpeting all over”, he said.
He added that a “clear indication” has been given by the report that government has been churning out different figures in its dealings with workers.
