The Northern Regional election committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) went on with its planned Regional congress to elect executives for the party despite a court order restraining them from holding the congress today and tomorrow.
A regional member of the NDC, Mohammed Aliu, yesterday dragged the party to court to seek an injunction on the Regional congress claiming he was unfairly disqualified from contesting the party’s regional secretary position.
The injunction was to prevent the party from organising the regional elections scheduled for today and tomorrow.
But the Regional election executive committee this afternoon held the Youth election to select youth leaders of the party to preside over the delegates congress scheduled for tomorrow at the GNAT hall in Tamale.
Though the Electoral Commission, refused to supervise the election, the Regional election executive committee went ahead amidst heavy security at the congress grounds.
Incumbent Youth Organizer of the party Alhaji Mohammed Amin Abio polled 62 votes to beat his closest contender Mohammed Abdul Mumin who polled only 20 with Abdul saani Zogu obtaining only 3 votes.
Regional Director of Elections, Rashid "Computer" Tanko, told Joy News that the party was going ahead with the election even if the EC officials do not report.
He also maintained that the party is yet to be served with the writ and that the party will set up its own internal system to run the process.
The Youth organizer-elect Mohammed Amin Abio, in a victory message to delegates, thanked them for overwhelmingly renewing his mandate and promised to work to mobilize party’s grassroots in the Region to ensure that the party wins the 2016 elections.
