Incumbent Northern Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress Awudu Sorfo Azourka has been re-elected.
Delegates reposed their confidence in him at the party’s regional congress in Tamale on Saturday.
He polled 246 votes out of a total of 347 valid votes while his closest contender Alhaji Ibrahim Mobilla polled 63. The rest are: Alhaji Iddrisu Kpenaa 21, Alhaji Alhassan Libron 12, Alhaji Mohammed Sumani Zakaria 3, Alhassan Boham 2.
Elections of two key positions - regional secretary and treasurer - were suspended following a court order sought by a member of the party, Mohammed Aliu claiming that he was unjustifiable disqualified in his bid to become regional secretary of the party.
The result of the regional organizer position was cancelled after two candidates in the contest, Iddrisu Mohammed and Abubakari Abdul Moumin protested over omissions in the spellings of their names on the ballot paper.
Women’s organizer, Olivia Hawa Yahaya and her two deputies Hajia Abiba Kassim Baby and Hajia Mohammed Martha went unopposed.
The election was supervised by the electoral commission and witnessed by the NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and a former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo among others.
In their bid to maintain law and order, military personnel detailed to congress ended up injuring some delegates and incurring the displeasure of many candidates.
An aspirant for the Vice Chairmanship position, Kofi Iddi, who was a delegate himself, told Joy News he was slapped twice by a military personnel. He also claimed another person he named as Alhaji Ibrahim was hit with the butt of gun by the security personnel.
Other delegates said they were hit with guns, by the military personnel, on their ribs and legs without any provocation.
Meanwhile, General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah called on party supporters to desist from acts which are likely to destroy the umbrella family.
