The Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) has organized a special contest to fine-tune preparations towards a championship in the United Kingdom later this month.
The contest which came off last Friday, at the Mandela Park at Osu, a suburb of Accra is also aimed at reigniting the sport at the grassroots level.
The regional amateur boxing controlling body is billed to participate in the Haringey Police and Community Amateur Box Cup scheduled at Alexandra Palace Way, in London from Friday May 22 to Sunday, May 24 2009.
Among the packed schedule, it was Reformers Dan Nartey’s unanimous victory over Sonia Gym’s Richard Harrison in their heavyweight encounter that drew the headlines.
Nartey of the reconstituted Reformers team of the Ghana Prisons Service proved too strong for the well-built Harrison, a regular feature at the GAABA League since its inception.
The Prison Officer completely dominated his “civilian” opponent to announce the readiness of the pugilists for this year’s league slated for mid-June.
In the welterweight division, Eric Avorgah of Panix Gym stunned Frederick Lawson of the Fit Square Gym with a unanimous decision just as gym-mate Abdul Rahman Musa replicated a similar feat over Timothy Kumbuno of Reformers in their middleweight clash.
Will Power Gym’s Benjamin Lamptey maintained his winning streak with a majority decision win over Ardey Aryee of Reformers in the light welterweight clash whilst Jesse Lartey of Fit Square beat “old foe” Sulemana Tetteh of Wisdom Gym via a split decision in the bantamweight category.
