Members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association have been told not to go close to patients infected with the deadly coronavirus if they do not have the appropriate protective gear.

In a statement copied to JoyNews, the Association said its members account for the largest frontline health care providers and reiterated the need for the Health Ministry to provide the necessary logistics required to prevent the spread of the virus at designated COVID-19 treatment centres.

“Nursing and Midwifery managers must ensure that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are available for use by all nurses and midwives working in isolation units in the four designated treatment centres.

“In the event of the unavailability of these logistics at the isolation centres, we strongly advise our nurses and midwives to protect their lives by removing themselves from that environment,” the statement added.

Ghana has recorded six cases of the deadly virus in just a week.

The Director of Public health at the Ghana Health Service made the announcement on Sunday at a press briefing.

Dr Badu Sarkodie said all the cases are in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions.
