Government has assured residents whose buildings will be affected by the Greater Accra region's coastline roads construction project of adequate compensation.

This was made known by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at the sod cutting ceremony of the La Beach road project in Nungua.

"For those whose properties will be destroyed, government will ensure that you are adequately compensated and compensated on time for the loss that you may suffer," Dr Bawumia said.

Government has cut the sod for the beginning of the La/Beach road project, decades after being in the pipeline.

Dozens of houses and businesses, however, will have to be demolished to make way for the dualization of the 26.6 kilometre stretch from Accra to Tema.

In spite of these demolitions, the Vice President has assured that archaeological sites, including historical buildings, will not be destroyed in the process.

"Some communities have archaeological sites; buildings and structures of historical importance. They are landmarks of our nation's struggle for independence like the Osu crossroads. This would be preserved for our posterity. We are not going to touch them," he said.

He went on further to charge the Ministry of Roads and Highways to ensure that these national monuments are protected during the construction of the road.

"The works as stated is being undertaken by the Ministry of Roads with the Department of Urban Roads as the implementing agency. I'll urge the supervisors to ensure that adequate traffic management measures are put in place to reduce inconvenience to commuters along the corridor during the period of construction.

"I'll also appeal to all road users [to] bear with the contractor and supervisors during the construction and cooperate with them to ensure greater public safety and an early completion," he added.
