A member of the School of Public Health at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has called on government to reveal the factors that influence the cost of rapid Covid-19 test at the airport.
Global Health expert, Dr John Amuasi stated that there is a need to consider this as some members of the public have compared the $150 charged at the Kotoka International Airport to cheaper rapid tests available.
"I'm not in the position to comment on the pricing but what I'll do isreally encourage the authourities to provide us a detailed breakdown of how $150 was arrived us.
"What is the cost of consumables, reagent. machines, independent service provider etc, to make a judgement of the cost," he said.
This comes after President Nana Addo announced the resumption of air travel which had been banned following the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country.
Government announced that all travellers coming to Ghana by air are supposed to pay $150 (¢868) for Covid-19 testing.
This mandatory testing, which is to be conducted for all passengers coming into the country forms part of directives outlined by the Ministry of Aviation and Health to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus and ensure that the deadly disease is not imported into the country.
The Global Health expert noted that although there are risks associated with the decision, it is better than waiting for a later date.
Meanwhile, he stated that the KCCR has not evaluated the rapid test system that is intended to be used at the airport.
But he believes they may efficient according to his readings and the manufacturer's review.
Currently, Ghana has recorded 44, 298 total cases of coronavirus. There have been 276 deaths and 42,963 recoveries so far.
