The Speaker of Parliament has summoned the Interior Minister to appear before the House on Tuesday, October 12 to brief Members of Parliament on the killing of Mfantseman MP.
Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye addressing the House after observing a minute of silence in honour of the late Ekow Quansah Hayford said Ambrose Dery's invitation is to inform MPs on measures being implemented to protect them, particularly, in this elections time.
He noted that not all MPs hail from Accra, with some coming from faraway places to do their job as expected of them as lawmakers, therefore, it is important that they are protected to prevent a reoccurrence of such an "unfortunate" incident.
“I respectfully direct the Interior Minister to appear before the House on Tuesday to give explanations, and assure the protection of honourable members so they will advise themselves as they see fit in all the circumstances,” he said.
Prof Ocquaye also asked personnel responsible for the protection of MPs to be on alert in administering their duties.
He further cautioned legislators who sometimes resist the implementation of protection to desist from such acts noting that, the security is to keep them safe.
According to him, “If you go to Nigeria, and we are not talking about the UKs and the Sweden, you will see that the MPs are actually catered for in Abuja, London etc. in terms of accommodation and security.
“I think we [Ghana] must seriously highlight these issues and settle them ones and for all in this country, it will help everybody.”
The late Ekow Quansah Hayford was reported to have been attacked around 1 am on Friday by six armed highway robbers on the Abeadze Dominase – Abeadze Duadzi – Mankessim road.
According to eyewitness, the MP and his entourage were on their way back from a campaign trip when he robbers shot at the back of his car and made the MP get down from his vehicle and shot him twice.
