Housing and Works Minister has attributed government's inability to deliver on its promise to provide over 10,000 housing units to Ghanaians to the lack of funding as well as the Covid-19 pandemic.
Samuel Atta-Akyea noted that despite government's commitment to ensuring that the projects were completed to fill the housing deficit gap in the country, Covid-19 and financial constraints has barred its progress.
"The issues are all premised on the financial space that we could have. The people [contractors] were eager to complete the project... but the reality is that, we do not have the financial muscles to fund serious infrastructure like housing," he said.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration has promised to address the country's 2 million housing deficit.
The promise started in 2005 during the Kufour administration when former President John Agyekum Kufour promised to house 1.7 million Ghanaians with his affordable housing project.
In 2019 however, the NPP government under President Akufo-Addo's government announced an agreement with Solin, a private Hungarian company to commence the construction of affordable houses for Ghanaians across the country.
Housing and Works Minister Samuel Atta-Akyea said the partnership agreement will see to the delivery of fast and cost-effective houses, based on a polystyrene concrete technology, to ultimately construct 10,000 housing units for Ghanaians.
Subsequently, the Minister announced that government had started construction works on the project.
He, however, has disclosed that the progress of the project has stalled because funding from the Hungarian government seized as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"It's not off the table, they're committed to assisting," he said.
