On the eve of the presidential election, Beyoncé encouraged her 155 million Instagram followers to vote, including fellow Texans, and disclosed that she supports Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the race for the Oval Office.
The singer posted a video of herself on Instagram Monday wearing a Biden-Harris face mask, and tipping the brim of her floppy print hat to reveal an “I Voted” sticker.
“Come thru, Texas! #vote 😘,” she wrote in the caption, with President Donald Trump leading in recent polls in the state by the slimmest margin seen in years, leading Democrats to hope that a victory there could be possible.
This year, Beyoncé’s home state—known for its historically low turnout—has demolished voting records, with nearly 10 million Texans having cast their vote during the three-week early voting period, including mail-in ballots.
She followed up her endorsement with an Instagram post with the phrase “The most important drop is at the ballot box,” a play on her recently sold-out Ivy Park and Adidas collaboration.
Tangent
It’s not Beyoncé’s first time to drop a political endorsement as it comes down to the wire. In 2018, she faced some criticism for showing her support for Beto O’Rourke, a Texas Democrat running for the U.S. Senate, in an Instagram post just hours before the polls closed on Election Day.
Key background
Beyoncé is one of the most influential entertainers in the world, with a following of devoted fans called “The Beyhive.” According to Forbes, she’s also one of the most well paid, with an estimated net worth of $420 million.
In June, she encouraged viewers of the virtual BET Awards to be civically engaged during the 2020 election cycle.
“I encourage you to take action, to continue to change,” she said. “We have to vote like our lives depend on it, because it does.”
She previously supported Democratic candidates for president like Barack Obama (at whose 2012 inauguration she performed) and Hillary Clinton.
