Mali came from behind to beat Benin 3-1 and get their first win of the final round of 2010 qualifying on Sunday.
Mali had been bottom of the Group D table with just one point from two games, but now vault into second place.
They started badly on home soil in Bamako, going down to a goal from Benin's Seidath Tchomogo in the 12th minute.
But the scores were level 10 minutes later when Modibo Maiga fired home.
And it stayed at 1-1 for much of the rest of the match, with Benin hoping to hold on and get an excellent point.
But home pressure eventually told as Mamadou Diallo put Mali into the lead, and then with seven minutes remaining Fredi Kanoute scored to confirm the Eagles' win.
