The struggle for internal control in the opposition National Democratic Congress appears to be growing ahead of the party’s congress to elect new national executives.
The Samuel Ofosu Ampofo led administration is likely to face stiff opposition from leading members of the party some of whom have expressed dissatisfaction with the state of affairs so far.
The outcome of the 2016 and 2020 elections both of which Mr Ampofo played a role as Director of Operations and party chairman respectively has become a source of worry for some party insiders.
Some of them do not understand why as an incumbent government, the NDC lost by close to a million votes in the 2016 elections.
Even more worrying, is the party’s failure to collate or show evidence of collated figures when it proceeded to court to challenge the 2020 general elections.
This week, some of them have taken to the streets demanding the official collation of results in the 2020 elections, a move criticized by some other members of the party.
With 2024 election beckoning, eyes are not only on who the jockey will be, but also who will prepare the horse for the jockey to ride, hopefully to victory in 2024.
Media reports suggest Nii Armah Ashitey is one of the candidates to contest the chairmanship position of the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Though, he has neither officially confirmed his position, nor declared interest in contesting the chairmanship position, some of the grassroot members of the party believe, the NDC deserves a new direction under a new chairman.
A popular grassroots person, a former Klottey Korle branch and constituency chairman, a former Member of Parliament in Klottey Korle, Nii Armah Ashitey is seen as a hardworking unifier, a strategist, and an efficient organizer with an unquestionable integrity and experience to lead the NDC.
If he decides to contest, Nii Armah Ashitey will most likely come face to face with the current Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, as the party fights for a make or break election in 2024.
