Tottenham midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng has shocked German football authorities by announcing his decision to play for the Black Stars instead of the European country. The 22-year-old has already approached the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to announce his intention of playing for the high-flying national team of Ghana. Boateng, who is born to a Ghanaian father and German mum, has played 41 matches for Germany at youth level but quit after being overlooked by the senior side. He told the German Football Federation on Wednesday that he is no longer interested in playing for the European country. "I will now play for Ghana," the 22-year-old revealed on Wednesday. "I have contacted the leaders of the Ghana Football Federation about this. "I made this decision myself. I wanted to get through to the German national team but it did not work out. I have tried everything." Boateng had an offer to play for Ghana before the 2006 World Cup in Germany but he turned it down in order to pursue a senior team place with the country of his birth. But after three years of waiting and dwindling fortunes at club level the youngster wants to concentrate on the Black Stars. "I have decided to leave my dreams of playing for Germany not out of anger,” Boateng said. "There are no negative reasons for the decision as I see no chances with the German national team anymore. That is all." Boateng is the grandnephew of Helmut Rahn, who scored the winning goal for Germany in the final of the World Cup as they beat Hungary 3-2. His junior brother Jerome is the star player for Germany at the ongoing European U-21 Championship in Sweden. Boateng has suffered stunted growth at club level with limited opportunities at English side Tottenham before he joined Borussia Dortmund on loan. Tottenham signed the former Germany Under-21 international Boateng from Hertha Berlin in July 2007 for a fee thought to be in the region of £5.4m. He had been voted Germany's best young player in 2006 and made 43 appearances for Hertha. Boateng is to benefit from a FIFA decision made earlier this month to abolish age limits for a player to switch national side having set a previous limit of 21.
