Tension is said to have mounted in the Yunyoo/Nasuani District of the North East Region due to refusal by the National Identification Authority (NIA) to begin the Ghana Card distribution exercise in the area.
About 3,600 people were expected to receive their cards in the district, but that may not happen as some youth have vowed to ensure the exercise does not take place.
The protest has led to the indefinite suspension of the exercise as the angry youth insist the District Lead Officer of the NIA and his two deputies would not be allowed to lead the exercise and must be replaced with natives of the district.
“We, the youth of Yunyoo/Nasuani District, will not give him space and peace of mind to operate, and we will chase him out anytime we see him in our district,” they told JoyNews’ Eliasu Tanko.
According to the protesters, the NIA's recruitment of non-indigenes as staff to lead the exercise in the area is unacceptable as they have competent people from the district.
“We will like to make our stance clear to the management of the NIA and those in authority that we shall accept DTL from any district apart from our own because we also have the men who are more than qualified for the position.”
They believe recruiting someone from the district will aid in effective communication and relationship.
“The leadership of Yunyoo Youth parliament appeal to the NIA management to bring a person from our district who understands the dynamics, languages and culture of the people.”
JoyNews understands the police and the Regional Security Council are currently in the community to restore peace.
