A court in Accra has injuncted the ongoing strike action by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) after an application from the National Labour Commission (NLC).

The Association is demanding a little over $2,000 as an entry-level salary for lecturers.

But after unsuccessful negotiations with government over their demands, the Commission says its injunction is necessary so lecturers can return to work while negotiations continue.

The UTAG has been on strike since Monday, August 2 and is demanding restoration of a 2012 Single Spine Salary Structure agreement that would have seen entry-level lecturers earn the cedi equivalent of $2,084 monthly.

Government had said it was confident the concerns of the Association will be resolved, so its members return to post if a roadmap is adopted within 24 hours of the strike being declared.

According to Bright Wereko Brobbey, Deputy Employment Minister, government was meeting with leaders of the striking Union to find common ground even as he insists government had shown commitment to address their issues.

However, negotiations broke down when both sides showed no commitment to back down on their demands.

UTAG has so far not commented on the injunction secured against its strike.
