The male and female national rugby teams are champions of the West African zone of the Rugby 7s Pre-World Cup qualifiers which came off at the Paa Joe Stadium in Kumasi.
Ghana battled Niger, Togo, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Benin to win the coveted title.
In the male category, Ghana began on a promising note, whitewashing Niger 32-0 before a comfortable 50-0 victory over Benin. Ghana mauled Benin yet again in the semis and went on to win the trophy after a hard-fought 17-15 win against Burkina Faso.
The national female rugby team, the Eaglets, were also impressive, comfortably thrashing Togo 51-0 in their first game. They struggled in the early parts of their second game against Burkina Faso but recovered brilliantly to secure a hard-fought 19-17 win. They secured comfortable wins against Benin and Cote D’Ivoire and finished as overall winners with 12 points.
Both the male and the female rugby national teams are through to the final stage of the Rugby 7s World Cup qualifiers.
