Executive Director for the Alliance for Christian Advocacy, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong is asking government to suspend the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy) Bill and seek further consultations with Ghanaians.

The tax policy since it's introduction in the 2022 Budget has been met with resistance from a majority of Ghanaians, with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) leading the charge against it.

Minority Members of Parliament have vowed to vote against it anytime it is introduced.

Some financial analysts and economists have also advised government to reconsider its position despite government's stance that the tax policy will aid the development of the country.

In an interaction with Benjamin Akakpo on the AM Show on Monday, the former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana said "the E-Levy is not only for founding or party members. It is for every Ghanaian. Whether you belong to party A,B or C.

"The nation is divided. It's not only Parliament that's divided on whether to pay or not to pay. Can the E-levy be suspended and then additional national conversations be held on it?"

Rev. Opuni-Frimpong described the timing as bad especially with the increase in fuel prices, transport fares etc.

"If you talk about the timing, we may need to consider suspending the E-Levy because we are paying fuel at the moment plus its effect on other sectors. Now transport fares are being increased and it will affect the price of kenkey and everything. Our leaders must empathise with Ghanaians and carry the nation along. At the moment, I'm afraid the nation is divided".

Meanwhile, government is holding townhall meetings in the various regions to rally support for the Bill.
