Government is embarking on a nationwide rural telephony and national roaming project for rural communities without stable mobile network connection.
The project which is expected to cover all rural communities in the country will begin this year.
Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful says the project will open up rural folks to the national economy and make accessibility to government services easily especially for business purposes.
She disclosed this at a commissioning of ICT Cyber Laboratory for the Nkoranza Methodist Basic School, Rural Telephony site at Boabeng Fiema and Chirehin Rural Telephony Project in the Bono East Region.
“We are bent on ensuring that the digital economy is felt in all parts of this country, hence government will support all partners and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC). We are embarking on an aggressive rural telephony and national roaming project.”
This will ensure every corner of the country has access to mobile network - both voice and data. It will also accelerate rural economic growth and open up the economy to our rural and underserved folks as well” she said.
The establishment of the projects sites were funded by GIFEC under the Ghana Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Project.
Bono East Regional Minister, Kwasi Adu-Gyan, used the occasion to remind the community of the importance of the facilities.
He assured that the regional coordinating council will work assiduously with the local assemblies to ensure that they are put to good use.
Speaking on the tourism potentials in the region, he stressed on the bad nature of roads to some tourist sites in the region like the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary.
He however noted that efforts are being made to give them a facelift and complete the ongoing projects in the region.
