Gospel musician and songwriter Cwesi Oteng has revealed that he was not rewarded for openly declaring his support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Ahead of the 2016 general elections in Ghana, the “I Win” singer pledged his support for the Nana Akufo-Addo-led party, however, the decision didn’t return any incentives.

When asked whether he was rewarded for putting his career on the line to throw his weight behind the political party, he said: “I don’t think so but it is cool. It’s alright,” he told Sammy Forson on Daybreak Hitz.

The singer went on to reflect on the perception that people hold when celebrities and public figures endorse political parties – that they are paid huge sums of money by the parties before they make the move.

In the case of Oteng, he wasn’t promised any reward for the campaign, and neither was he paid after the NPP successfully assumed the reins of power in 2016.

Meanwhile, according to the “God Dey Bless Me” singer, the only “benefit” he got from openly validating the political party was “relationship.”

“I have a relationship with the NPP. I can decide that I want to meet the President [Nana Akufo-Addo] and make an effort to see him,” said Cwesi Oteng.

Irrespective of Oteng’s affiliation with the ruling party, he cleared the air on the perception that having a relationship with a ruling party offers one leverage over other citizens – saying that his bond with the NPP does not necessarily grant him special privilege over the regular Ghanaian.

Singer Cwesi Oteng is currently on a media tour for the promotion of his recently-released single dubbed Mo’Mo.
