The Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party has taken on critics who are charging the party to postpone its national executive election.
The critics cited the current economic difficulties in the country. They contended that a postponement will signify an appreciation of the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian which has been occasioned by the prevailing economic challenges.
However, Freddie Blay has rejected the suggestion. He said such comments are not serious, adding that "it smacks of impudence."
Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, Sulemana Braimah in a post on Facebook on Wednesday suggested that it would be insensitive for the NPP to hold the event amidst the current crisis.
According to him, the postponement will reflect the government’s concern for the difficulties currently facing Ghanaians.
However, reacting to this, Freddie Blay stated that Mr Braimah shared an opinion that won’t be considered because party election is different from national elections.
He added that Mr Braimah's opinion is "intellectual propaganda.”
“Government doesn’t order that a party should not have elections .. honestly he doesn’t understand what he is talking about. It is an opinion he has expressed,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Elections Committee for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Mac-Manu says the party is geared up towards its national executive election which comes off tomorrow at the Accra Sports stadium.
He noted that the party is currently meeting all aspirants to address any last-minute concerns before the election is held.
“The various canopies are being erected left, right and center [at the Accra Sports stadium] and everything is on course. Yesterday we handed over what in NPP circles we call delegates album or the register with the delegates to the Electoral Commission,” he told JoyNews.
Already, some 6,000 delegates of the party are converging in Accra today ahead of the elections on Saturday.
The delegates will elect a new Chairman, General Secretary, National Organizer and other key officers who will be tasked to break the eight in 2024.
