Former President of the Ghana Football Association(GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, says he knew he could be the leader of the football governing body following his election as vice chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA).
"I believe that when I became the vice chairman GHALCA which automatically meant I was vice chairman of the GFA," he said on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai on Joy News.
"On a few occasions," he revealed "I acted as the chairman and when the chairman [Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe] unceremoniously resigned, I became the acting chairman.
"In that position, I gathered some experience in the office of the chairman and that metamorphose into president."
Nyantakyi beat off competition from Kojo Bonsu, Ade Coker, and Vincent Sowah-Odotei to win the seat in 2005.
"I had a lot of clubs backing me to become GFA President," he says.
"I was then the GFA vice chairman and acting chairman. A lot of people thought that they could entrust the destiny of the game as far as management was concerned into my hands."
Many clubs felt he was the right man to lead the association because of the services he rendered them and positions he worked in prior to assuming the role of acting chairman.
"I used to do a lot of pro bono cases for clubs at the Disciplinary Committee so I had relationship with then so they thought that if I was elevated higher the ladder, I could be more useful to them.
"I also served on many committees at the FA; salaries of staff, regulations of the FA; I chaired the committee on non-payment of 10% due the FA by the clubs including [Great] Olympics, I served on the legal committee, I served on the appeal committee, served on the Division One League Board, I served on the Executive Committee before becoming President," he revealed.
Nyantakyi was voted GFA president in December 2005.
