The German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull is calling on government and other nations to address climate change and deforestation.
He emphasised the necessity for all nations to work to combat climate change in accordance with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
Speaking at a tree-planting exercise at the garden of the German Ambassador’s residence, Wednesday, June 9, as part of the Green Ghana project, Mr Krull said, “We need all steps possible. Of course, there’s planting trees and also deforestation, we also need to join forces in fighting deforestation in the country and to preserve the natural reserves of any country.”
The Ambassador further expressed his elation at the fact that his invitation to former Minister of Environment, Science and Technology Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, to be the guest of honour at the tree planting ceremony was accepted.
Mr Krull described Professor Frimpong-Boateng as “a known fighter for environmental protection” in the country.
Commenting on the tree planting project, Professor Frimpong-Boateng urged Ghanaians to be conscious of protecting their environment.
He however, called for green belts in every city across Ghana.
“This is something that I wish we could do in Ghana— planting trees, maintaining our forests, and then leaving gardens in our towns and our cities— so that people can go there for recreation and for health reasons,” Prof Frimpong-Boateng stated.
In commemoration of Green Ghana Day, the Ambassador and Prof. Frimpong-Boateng planted a cocoa seedling in the Embassy garden.
Also, President Akufo-Addo who was speaking at the 2023 edition of the Green Ghana Day tree-planting exercise at the University of Ghana, called on Ghanaians to participate in the exercise.
He urged Ghanaians to plant a seedling as a contribution towards the 10 million per day target by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
President Akufo-Addo emphasised that “Government will therefore continue to explore all avenues to enhance our forest cover through afforestation and reforestation programme and protect our natural resources through community-based management and conservation initiative.
“Today, your contribution is to step out, take a seed, plant it, and make sure it grows.”
