The Ghana Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project (GUMAP) is being carried out by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development with assistance from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) in the Greater Accra region.
The project's goal is to increase accessibility and mobility by providing technical assistance, conducting surveys, building capacity, and gathering data in GAMA.
From Monday, July 24, 2023, to Saturday, September 30, 2023, the Ministry will be conducting a Household Travel Survey (HTS) as part of this initiative.
This is a unique initiative to gather thorough information on residents of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area's (GAMA) travel habits, behaviours, and transportation needs in order to inform transportation planning and management and contribute to the creation of an effective and sustainable transportation system.
Director of Human Resources at the Ministry, Kwabena Dekyira says this will help them gather comprehensive data on travel patterns, behaviours, and transportation demands of residents of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
“This survey is set to contribute to the development of a sustainable and efficient transportation system that meets the needs of the residents of GAMA in the years to come,” he said.
Technical Committee member of the GAMA project, Alex Johnson believes the survey will not only inform policy-making but will inform investors on investment opportunities in the area.
“From policy decisions, you also have investment decisions. This is the first time we would have a proper travel or household survey which goes down to zone to zone patterns of travel. Other developed systems have these kinds of data and what travel patterns to expect.”
The survey will encompass a representative sample of 7500 across diverse communities and residences in 29 Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies (MMAs) in GAMA.
