A Steering Committee member of the Ghana Compact, Dr. Yaw Perbi says there is a need to address cases of bullying in Senior High Schools.
He expressed worry over how incidents of bullying are on the rise predominantly in Senior High Schools.
Referencing the bullying incident that occurred at Adisadel College, Dr. Perbi proffered that the perpetrator be punished so as to deter other bullies.
“It seems like we are going about it the right way in terms of legal and psychological actions being taken. Let's get into the sociological aspect, let the social workers look into that context as well. But then let's look at the broader issue of bullying in our secondary schools.
“I think that it should attract serious, serious consequences. And maybe this will be unfortunately a scapegoat issue that will help to stop many others that are happening. The only reason why this has come to the fore is that somebody recorded it.”
He noted that the fact that other students were standing in the room at the time the abuse occurred and did not intervene indicated that bullying has become the norm.
In his opinion, the failure of the other students to intervene to prevent violence was worrying.
Dr. Pebi, therefore, called on the Ghana Education Service to implement measures to deal with bullying to eliminate the menace from senior high schools.
“This is a secondary school. Children are there to be formed, to be useful members of society. This is not a boxing arena or a wrestling ring. And I think that needs to be very clear. And let the consequences of this show that we are serious about not countenancing bullying in any form. And let's show that example as leaders of the society too.”
