The Wenchi Municipal Assembly, in the Bono Region, has given out 100 beehives with other beekeeping equipment to the Association of Beekeepers and Honey Producers and individual farmers from various communities in the municipality.
The provision of the beehives by the assembly is to boost beekeeping among the youth to better the local economy.
The 100 beehives and their accessories are the first batch of 1,200 beehives that the Wenchi Municipal Assembly promised to give to beekeepers to enhance production of the bee subsector in the area.
The initiative also forms part of the assembly's local economic development programmes to improve the living standard of the people.
Presenting the beehives to the farmers, the Chairman of the Agriculture Sub-Committee of the Wenchi Municipal Assembly, Suwari Ibrahim Abdul-Rahman, reiterated the assembly's commitment to boost the local economy.
‘‘We want to achieve this by creating the enabling environment and providing the needed support to the local people with the requisite tools and technical know-how,’’ he added.
He admonished the beneficiaries to use the equipment well to achieve the needed results and value for money.
The Chairman of the Agriculture Sub-Committee advised the beekeepers to seek assistance from the Agriculture Department to maximise the production of pure honey.
The beekeepers received training in modern beekeeping and honey harvesting methods to equip them with the requisite skills to use the beehives.
The Association of Beekeepers and Honey Producers expressed their gratitude to the Wenchi Municipal Assembly for providing the beehives to assist in their beekeeping activities.
