The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr Akuffo Dampare has dismissed claims that he masterminded the recording of the leaked tape purported contain discussions to oust him from office.
Appearing before the Parliament’s ad-hoc committee on Tuesday, Dr Akuffo Dampare said such claims are untrue.
According to him, he is not behind the recording of the alleged tape, and does not have any working relations with former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu, who claimed to have recorded it.
“Honourable Chair, that is untrue,” Dr Akuffo Dampare said when asked by the Chairman, Samuel Atta Akyea whether he was the architect of the leaked video.
His comments follow Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah's claim during his appearance before the committee on September 1, that the IGP masterminded the recording of his conversation with Bugri Naabu.
He added, “My intel suggests that what was used to tape the conversation was done by the current IGP,” COP Alex Mensah had claimed, alleging also that the IGP superintended the leaking of the tape as well.
“He sent some people to do it, after which he went for it. So the tape, from my intel, is with the IGP, and he caused it to be leaked. So if this committee wants the tape, the right person to call before this committee is the Inspector General of Police,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Akuffo Dampare says that his rise to the position of IGP was based on merit and not any other considerations.
According to him, he has been diligent about his work, adding that he earned his position duly and not based on favours.
“So in terms of my ranking in the Police Service, it has been purely based on my competencies, my academic qualifications and hard work because of the passion I have for the work. I have not at any point in time been called aside by any individual and granted me any favour,” he said.
