Famous Nigerian singer Inetimi Odon, popularly known as Timaya, has cautioned people against using recreational drugs.
During an interview on The Beat FM, Timaya disclosed his struggles with drug addiction, which he said began in 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. He revealed that breaking the addiction was a difficult challenge.
“Everybody was home (during COVID) and there are those young guys in my house who are always so happy. I was like ‘Bro, how are you guys happier than me? I am the boss, I got money. What are you guys on?’ And they told me that they got molly (a popular recreational drug).”
“When I took it, I did not understand myself. I was so happy that I dashed all the money in my pocket,” Timaya said.
However, the musician soon found himself dependent on the substance to sustain his newfound happiness.
He admitted to a downward spiral, consuming multiple molly pills daily, experiencing significant weight loss due to lack of proper food and compromising his health.
“How you go just want dey happy? You are supposed to, first of all, be happy naturally. But when you now need substance to make you happy, it replaces the natural happiness. So you have to be buying happiness,” Timaya said.
Timaya said he is grateful for the intervention of concerned individuals, including devoted fans who encouraged him to break free from his destructive lifestyle, ultimately helping him to prioritise his health and well-being.
“Breaking off from drugs was a hell, it was a tough fight,” he stated. Timaya said he travelled abroad to isolate himself until he could fully recover from the effects of the drugs.
