A Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana says the timing of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Mahama's announcement of the 24-hour economic policy is strategic.
Dr Kwame Asah-Asante argues that unveiling the policy at this juncture provides the NDC with ample opportunity to elucidate its details to the Ghanaian populace, allowing voters to make informed decisions.
Dr Asah-Asante believes that the 24-hour economy policy could be a pivotal factor for the NDC in the upcoming December 2024 elections.
During an interview on JoyNews' AM Show on Monday, the Political Scientist dismissed assertions that the NDC unveiled the policy prematurely, suggesting that it has not lost momentum.
In his view, the timing allows the party to address any doubts or misconceptions among voters effectively.
"I disagree that the 24-hour Economy policy was brought at the wrong time. I think it was brought at the right time, and it’s the best policy for the NDC, and it will be the game changer for NDC in the December elections.
"Ghanaians will look at it, discuss it and pose questions for the NDC. So it will be the game changer for the NDC. "
Mr Mahama unveiled the policy last year, aiming to introduce a flagship programme to revitalise the country's economy if the NDC wins power in the December elections.
The proposed initiative aims to jumpstart Ghana's economy by offering incentives such as tax breaks to manufacturers and various workers to operate additional shifts, thereby creating more job opportunities.
