The Coordinator for STEM Education at the Ga West Education Directorate in the Greater Accra Region, Justice Amewugah has raised concerns about the slow adoption of the new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum in local schools due to inadequate modern equipment.
Speaking on behalf of Mr Victor Tawiah, Director of the Ga West Education Directorate, Amewugah emphasized that the absence of state-of-the-art tools has led teachers to rely more on abstract teaching methods rather than practical, hands-on learning.
Amewugah explained that the new curriculum was designed to allow students to physically engage with materials in the laboratory, enhancing their understanding through direct experience. However, the lack of necessary equipment is hampering this approach.
Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism about the measures taken to address the issue. The Ga West Education Directorate has arranged for students from all 46 public schools in the municipality to periodically visit other schools equipped with the necessary facilities for practical learning.
While hopeful that these measures will improve student performance, Amewugah noted that the overall lack of equipment in public schools remains a significant obstacle. He emphasized the importance of hands-on experiences in the age of AI and modern educational approaches.
The municipal education directorate has begun efforts to procure the required equipment, albeit gradually, given the available resources.
Amewugah also urged parents to nurture their children's curiosity, encourage them to ask questions and support the development of their critical thinking skills.
Justice Amewugah reiterated the need for practical, hands-on learning to foster a deeper understanding and urged continued support from the community to overcome the current challenges.
