President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sworn in Deputy Chief of Staff, Fawaz Aliu and two others as new Ambassadors.
Mr Aliu has been appointed Ambassador-At-Large in addition to his current role.
The latest appointment comes two months after the President appointed his Executive Secretary, Nana Bediatuo Asante, as an Ambassador-at-Large.
Nana Bediatuo Asante, who has served as the President’s Executive Secretary since 2017, received his new appointment during a ceremony held at the Jubilee House. At this event, President Akufo-Addo also presented credentials to nine newly appointed diplomats, urging them to actively promote Ghana’s image and interests abroad.
During the latest ceremony held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, August 7, President Akufo-Addo named Major General Charles Kojo Abedi Awity as Ghana’s Ambassador to Serbia, and Mr Peprah Ampratwum, Ambassador In-Situ.
An Ambassador in situ is an informal term used to describe someone who is consistently present and actively involved in key events or decision-making processes. This person is seen as a pivotal figure, often perceived to be overseeing or influencing outcomes. The term combines the role of an "ambassador," a representative figure, with the concept of being "in situ," meaning physically present or on-site.
President Akufo-Addo was confident the three will excel in this new role, and further strengthen Ghana’s diplomatic efforts worldwide.
The President charged the new Ambassadors to help deepen the ties between Ghana and other countries as well as connect Ghana to investment opportunities.
Major General Abedi on behalf of his colleagues, pledged to serve Ghana in an exemplary manner.
Already, some Ghanaians are questioning both the timing and necessity of these appointments, calling them insensitive in the face of current economic challenges.
With constant calls on the President to reduce the size of government, the new appointment has generated some conversation.
