Emeritus Bishop of Konongo-Mampong, Most Rev Joseph Osei-Bonsu, says it is important for political parties to sign the peace pact and commit to ensuring a peaceful December 7 general election.
According to him, the significance of signing such a document lies in demonstrating the parties' dedication to peace and their willingness to do everything possible to maintain it during the election.
Speaking on JoyNews’ UpFront on Wednesday, August 21, Most Rev Osei-Bonsu said that the signing of the peace pact has not lost its relevance.
He explained “I don’t think so. I think it’s good to commit the political parties to such an agreement so if they sign it, then they commit themselves to ensuring that there is peace so I think it’s still relevant.”
He acknowledged the stance of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in expressing concerns about signing the peace pact but clarified that this does not mean they should refuse to sign it.
“If you don’t sign it, then what are you telling Ghanaians, that you’re against peace or what? They have a good protest to make about Techiman and so on but at the same time I think they should commit themselves to the peace agreement,” he said.
Addressing the lives lost during the 2020 general elections and the lack of action taken, Most Rev. Osei-Bonsu expressed concern, noting that the issue should have been investigated by the police and other relevant agencies.
“Unfortunately, it has not been done but that does not mean that we should not sign the peace agreement. Two wrongs do not make a right and so they [NDC] be part of the peace agreement,” he added.
