The SEED Elite Camp 2024 successfully concluded last Sunday at the University of Ghana, leaving an indelible mark on the 56 young athletes and 13 academies that participated.
Spearheaded by SEED Academy Ghana, the camp offered a transformative blend of basketball training, leadership development, and life-skills education aimed at nurturing the next generation of leaders.
The event featured renowned coaches, including former NBA player and Basketball Africa League (BAL) Ambassador Pops Mensah-Bonsu, WNBA legend Angel McCoughtry, and Angolan BAL stars Carlos Morais and Jone Pedro, who brought a wealth of experience and inspiration to the young participants.
Holistic development beyond basketball
Speaking after the camp, Pops Mensah-Bonsu emphasised the importance of nurturing leadership alongside athletic skills.
"We didn’t give MVP trophies for basketball, we gave leadership awards because that’s what it meant to these kids to be leaders," he said.
The camp incorporated off-court programming, such as visits to the BAL Celebrity Games, which showcased the potential career opportunities within the world of basketball.
Campers joined 100 youth from local organisations to give back to their communities, embodying the spirit of the Adinkra symbol Sankofa: "It’s all about reaching back and giving back," he noted.
The camp also featured a leadership summit, where participants engaged with industry professionals who highlighted diverse career pathways related to basketball.
Vision for the future
Looking ahead, Mensah-Bonsu outlined ambitious plans for SEED Academy Ghana, including quarterly camps, the establishment of an academy-wide league, and infrastructure development to level the playing field for young athletes.
"In the next 10 years, SEED Academy will be the biggest academy in the world," he declared. "We will have developed a generation of leaders and changed the global outlook on Ghana."
Weekend of impact
The SEED Elite Camp 2024 was part of a weekend of activities that included the inaugural SEED Sports Leadership Summit on December 28, featuring discussions on advancing basketball development in Ghana. Notable figures such as BAL Vice President John Manyo-Plange joined Mensah-Bonsu in sharing strategies for fostering talent and infrastructure.
The Community Day of Play reinforced SEED Academy’s commitment to community service, with participants engaging in sports activities alongside local youth.
Shaping the future
Founded in 2018, SEED Academy Ghana has consistently combined sports and education to empower young leaders and drive social transformation. Through initiatives like the Elite Camp and the Community Day of Play, SEED continues to inspire Ghana’s youth, providing them with tools to excel both on and off the court.
With plans for expansion and continued focus on holistic development, SEED Academy Ghana is poised to redefine basketball and leadership training in Ghana and beyond.
