Ghanaian musician and medical doctor, Knii Lante, has raised concerns over how a lot of health workers are leaving the country for greener pastures abroad.
In a conversation with Doreen Avio on Daybreak Hitz, Knii Lante bemoaned the development which is affecting the country's health sector.
“We have to remind the government that we have a big problem in health care. Doctors, nurses, people are leaving in droves. The last time, I passed Abelemkpe and I saw a long queue, with some people dressed in nurses' white apparel and stuff. I asked 'what are these people doing?' and they said that was the place where people get visa for Canadian embassy," he said.
Knii Lante emphasised that the doctor-patient ratio in Ghana is alarming, with one doctor responsible for thousands of patients.
“The doctor-patient ratio is in Ghana is horrible. I mean it is like one to thousand. If we look at the size of population and the size of doctors we have, one doctor has to take care of thousands of people,” he said.
He stressed that the government needs to prioritise healthcare, increasing funding for medical and nursing schools, and providing better working conditions to retain healthcare professionals.
In the meantime, Knii Lante has released a new song, 'Everyday is Valentine'. He has explained that this song is to express love to each other in the community and not only on the 14th of February.
