The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Sam George, has revealed that he has summoned Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) for an urgent meeting in response to the growing cases of mobile money fraud in Ghana.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, 15th April, he described the trend as deeply concerning and promised swift action.
“The surge in mobile money fraud is unacceptable. I have summoned all EMIs to a meeting this week to demand answers and clear strategies to protect consumers. The meeting was supposed to be on Thursday but they’ve pleaded that they want make it after the Easter break,” Mr George disclosed.
He added that the government will not sit idle while Ghanaians lose their money to digital criminals.
He explained that the meeting will focus on accountability, user protection measures, and the enforcement of digital security standards among service providers.
“There will be consequences for platforms that are not doing enough to safeguard the funds of their users,” he stressed.
Mr George also hinted at the possibility of regulatory changes to tighten the digital payment space.
“We are reviewing the regulatory environment, and if it means amending laws to compel stricter compliance, we will not hesitate,” he noted.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
“While the government is doing its part, users must also protect themselves by being cautious and informed.”
